Buffalo ORC was launched in 2023 after careful observation of on-the-water racing results and a deep dive analysis of various scoring methodologies.

Buffalo ORC uses internationally tested racing algorithms and takes into consideration a variety of racing conditions. These algorithms have been time tested over years of data collection world-wide. A clear indicator of the utility of ORC Scoring is that your ORC certificate will not change from venue to venue, lake to lake or ocean to ocean. Your ORC certificate will be the same wherever you sail on planet earth. This is clearly a difference with PHRF scoring that changes depending where you are sailing. You are no longer at the mercy of an individual committee that may or may not have your best interests, and overall fairness, in mind.

ORC scoring also requires you to have your sails accurately measured and to use only sails that have been measured and included in your ORC certificate. Please refer to the section on how to apply and obtain an ORC certificate for your boat.

The overall goal of Buffalo ORC is to implement and maintain a reliable and fair scoring system for all competitors.
